My Story
In October 2025, I came to Cascade Medical for a routine mammogram, an appointment I nearly skipped because sometimes life feels too busy. A colleague and close friend encouraged me to take advantage of an open appointment while I was on shift, and I’m incredibly grateful I did. Having experienced benign fibroids since my early twenties, I didn’t initially think anything serious was wrong but was happy to quickly get it out of the way.
That decision changed everything.
My screening and subsequent tests revealed early-stage breast cancer. Catching it early gave me options. It allowed me to make informed decisions about my care and ultimately pursue a treatment path that may not have been possible otherwise. Because it was caught so early, I can say today I am in complete remission and did not require chemotherapy or radiation.
I recognize that every patient’s journey is different, but my experience reinforced how critical routine screenings and early detection truly are, even when life feels busy.
I also experienced firsthand what makes Cascade Medical such a special place. It’s a close-knit environment where people genuinely care, and that shows in how patients are treated. There is a level of responsiveness, compassion, and personal connection here that made a meaningful difference in my experience.
What stands out the most is the support I received, not just at the beginning but every step of the way. I had a dedicated advocate at Cascade who helped coordinate my care, answer questions, and guide me through what could have been an overwhelming process, countless calls, coordination, and follow through to make sure I was able to access specialized treatment at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. I ultimately chose to undergo a bilateral mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, something I don't take lightly, but something I'm grateful I had the ability to choose. An option only made possible by early detection.
I never felt like I was navigating it alone. That level of care, compassion, and coordination made all the difference.
During my time away from work, I was surrounded by support from my colleagues and community, meals, donated paid time off, messages, and people checking in. That support has continued and is something I still feel even after my return to work to care for the Cascade community.
Through the support of the Cascade Medical Foundation, women who are uninsured or underinsured have access to no-cost mammograms. I’ve seen how important that access is, and now I understand even more personally how life-changing it can be.
Cascade is a special place where kindness leads. It's a place where patients are met with gentleness, compassion, respect, and understanding, even in the most difficult moments. I’m deeply grateful for the care I received and proud to be part of a team that provides that same patient-centered approach to our community every day.
Today, I’m proud to be part of Cascade Medical, not only as a nurse, but as someone who has experienced this care as a patient.
Gratefully,
Krista Camburn, RN, Acute Care Nurse | Cascade staff for 10 years
